Our New Neighbors

As of yesterday, we are now located in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood, which is just north of downtown situated near Lake Union. We were a bit bummed to be leaving Capitol Hill, but also excited as most of our good friends live on this side of the city. Fremont is a quaint neighborhood with lots of trees and personality, and we're looking forward to getting to know the area a bit better.

New neighbor #1 is the Fremont Troll, who you may recognize from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You.

Neighbor #2 is Russian dictator Vladimir Lenin. The statute was done under commission from the Soviet and Czechoslovak governments and once stood in Lenin Square. After the fall of communism, a Seattle resident saw it in a scrapyard in Czechoslovakia and bought and shipped it to Seattle. It now stands in the middle of the Fremont neighborhood.

Neighbor 3 is the Fremont Rocket. This is an actual rocket fuselage that was dismantled after the Cold War and through some creative ambition was attached to the side of a local business.

The last new neighbor is Paseo's, home to pretty much my favorite sandwich ever. As it is now just one block from our house, I hope to feast on this beauty much more frequently.

enough is enough!

The other day we were going to Ben and Mandy's for "Dinner and a TV show," as I like to call it. I was picking Tyler up from work, and we were then heading straight to their place, so Tyler asked me to bring him a change of clothes. I brought him some basketball shorts and a t-shirt thinking that our friendship had made it to that level where Tyler would feel comfortable enough to wear them to their house. I was wrong. So wrong. Tyler looked at me and said, "in the six years that we've been married, when have I ever shown up to a friends house wearing a t-shirt and basketball shorts?" The answer to that question was quite simple: never! Not one time. He drove home to change and we were late to Ben and Mandy's for dinner.

Since we are moving in two days, I have been spending my week making two piles: things to pack and things to get rid of. Our "things to get rid of" pile is so high at this point that it is nearly touching the ceiling. Today I started on our bedroom and came across this...

Yes, those are t-shirts, all of which were shoved under our bed. I just kept pulling more and more t-shirts out of what seemed like a never ending black hole. Most of them are sports: Utah Jazz, Cougar Football, Lassen College. Many of them are from Hawaii: University of Hawaii, Hawaii PD, etc., etc.

My question is, why does one need so many t-shirts if you NEVER even wear them?!? Many still have the tags attached to them!

I also came across this...

I like to call this the Leaning Tower of Polos

and lets not forget about these...

Could you say that my husband has a lot of clothes? Well, I've had enough! I am making him get rid of half of everything he owns tonight! If Tyler is in need of anymore t-shirts, polos, or dress shirts, I'll be sure to let you know.

I know this is a lame post....

neighborhood block party

every summer our neighborhood throws a little bash, and the basic premise is this: shut down the streets, put up three stages, watch tons of bands over a two day period, and get completely drunk and/or stoned. it's a summer ritual that i have a good time taking part in (except for the last part, of course) and i look forward to the block party every year. this year the lineup wasn't quite as deep on bands that i wanted to see, but it did feature perhaps the biggest headliners ever in sonic youth.

to be quite honest, i've never been much of a sonic youth fan as they were a bit before my time. but they are such a highly regarded and influential band that i figured i couldn't pass up the chance to see them in my own backyard. despite my unfamiliarity with most of their catalog, this turned out to be one of the best concert experiences of my life. the streets were packed, and there were people on balconies, fire escapes, and rooftops all to see the iconic band. it was really quite the setting. the only downside is that we ended up so close to the speakers that my ears and head hurt for days. oh well, a small price to pay, i suppose.

we also watched watched sets from gossip (who played an awesome cover of aaliyah's 'are you that somebody'), pela (who i was seeing for a personal record 4th time), the thermals and truckasaurus, but obviously the night belonged to sonic youth.

Julie and Julia

So we just got back from seeing this movie with some friends, and all the while I had several questions running through my head: Did I really just crash an unofficial girls night to see this movie? Did I really just see this on opening night? Was I really the first in line at 9:30pm for a 10pm showing?

Uh...it's a movie about Julia-freaking-Child, of course I did!
